How to Fix a Running Toilet: A Step-by-Step Guide

by | Jun 15, 2024 | Blog

How to fix a running toilet? A running toilet can be more than just a nuisance—it can lead to wasted water and higher utility bills. Fortunately, fixing a running toilet is a relatively simple DIY task that you can handle with some basic tools and a little know-how. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to fix a running toilet, helping you save water and money.

Step 1: Identify the Problem

Before you start fixing your running toilet, it’s important to identify the root cause. There are several common reasons why a toilet might run:

  1. Faulty Flapper: The flapper might not be sealing properly, allowing water to continuously flow from the tank to the bowl.
  2. Overflow Tube Issues: The water level in the tank might be too high, causing water to spill into the overflow tube.
  3. Fill Valve Problems: The fill valve may not be shutting off properly, causing the tank to overfill.

Step 2: Gather Your Tools and Materials

You’ll need the following tools and materials to fix a running toilet:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Replacement flapper or fill valve (if necessary)
  • Plumber’s tape

Step 3: Turn Off the Water Supply

Before you begin any repairs, turn off the water supply to the toilet. The shut-off valve is usually located behind the toilet. Turn it clockwise to stop the flow of water. Flush the toilet to empty the tank.

Step 4: Check and Replace the Flapper

  • Inspect the Flapper: Lift the toilet tank lid and check the flapper at the bottom of the tank. If it’s worn out or damaged, it won’t seal properly.
  • Replace the Flapper: If the flapper is the problem, replace it with a new one. Remove the old flapper by disconnecting it from the chain and hinges. Attach the new flapper and connect the chain, making sure it has the right amount of slack.

Step 5: Adjust the Water Level

  • Check the Water Level: The water level should be about an inch below the top of the overflow tube. If it’s too high, adjust the fill valve.
  • Adjust the Fill Valve: Depending on the type of fill valve, you may need to turn a screw or move a clip to adjust the water level. Lower the water level to the appropriate height.

Step 6: Inspect and Replace the Fill Valve

  • Inspect the Fill Valve: If adjusting the water level doesn’t stop the toilet from running, the fill valve may be faulty.
  • Replace the Fill Valve: Turn off the water supply and flush the toilet to empty the tank. Disconnect the water supply line from the fill valve. Remove the old fill valve and install a new one according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Reconnect the water supply line and turn the water back on.

Step 7: Test the Toilet

Turn the water supply back on and let the tank refill. Once the tank is full, check for any leaks and ensure the toilet stops running. Flush the toilet a few times to make sure everything is working properly.

Called Armstrong plumbing and talked to Roger, told him I had a hose bib leaking and water was getting into the house. He asked what time was good for me and his plumber, Chris, showed up right on time and got the job done quickly and then cleaned up after. By the way, once he got the wall open, it was apparent the last plumber didn't do the job right, want it done right the first time, then Call Armstrong plumbing first! I don't know that I would call anyone else.

I want to thank Armstrong Plumbing for helping my family in a time that is extremely difficult by making themselves available for a HWH install on a Sunday. With nearly 40 years in the real estate industry, and majority of it in new home building, I have experienced a lot of trades / vendors in the industry. Armstrong Plumbing exceeded my expectations and hands down earned their 5 star rating with EXCELLENT communication, professionalism and friendly service, left the garage better than the condition it was in, faster than expected response and install time and hauled away the old HWH. If you’re looking for an experience, honest, fairly priced and a reliable plumber, Armstrong Plumping delivers all of it. The price they take in their service is hard to come by in today’s world, call them now and you’ll be happy you did.

I had a leaky garden hose bib that we tried the DIY thing. Unfortunately, it was not an easy thing to do and were afraid to damage the copper pipe from the house. I googled plumbers and found Armstrong Plumbing, read a lot of excellent reviews and decided to call them. Roger answered the phone. He was able to send Chris to do the job the same day. In a few hours, the repair was done and since my house did not have a water pressure reducer valve, one was installed. I highly recommend Armstrong Plumbing, because they are prompt, reliable, efficient and Chris arrived as promised. I believe I got a fair price.
